Thanks to this work I could discover better a mysterious and bad-known side of the ex-USSR.

Through this presentation I realised that posters were one of the main tool used by the Soviet Union leadership, first to promote communism and its values, then to support the 3rd international.
The main values shown by posters were values of education, of progress, of labour and of pride for the state. Then posters has been used to help the development of industries, the involvement of people in the labour and in technical innovation.

It is also interesting to underline that posters have been used by the government for health and social campaigns, such as campaign against alcohol and cigarettes, for safety in factories, for awareness towards help-needed people, and for ecological issues.

But posters was also a strong politic tool against capitalism through images which emphasize communism ideology and which criticize Western countries economy and policies.

There has been a return to Social Realism after the 2nd World War and Staline came again the focus of the posters, specially between 1946 and 1953.
In the 60's, posters showed more heroic and satirical images as the country entered more and more in the Cold War and the Sapce Race.

The invasion of Hitler has changed the landscape of advertising. Communism and class struggle turned into a Patriotic appeal.
As the Soviet Union needed any help it could find, anti-religious themes disappeared.
Many of the posters of this time has been created by young artists who have revealed a stylistic shift toward realism.

As Staline took control of USSR in 1928, he put an end to the NEP and started the Five Year Plan and turned the country into a powerful industrial nation, which became a large field of massive construction.

He imposed the new form of art, the "Social realism", and reduced the Soviet Life and Communist values.
Posters under Staline became more and more strident and numerous. To be a support for the communist ideology and society and to become a weapon against State ennemies (specially capitalism), posters showed the Soviet Union as the champion of peace and social justice.

With the Second Five Year Plan, the voluntee was te rearm the country against the Nazy menace.
At this time, Staline became more and more paranoiac and exiled or shot anyone who were suspected of opposition or even had a lack of enthousiasm.

Novy Mir was the main literary journal of the Soviet regime.
It contained articles of general topics on art, politics and science as well as poems and reviews.

Because of the 1st world war, the USSR economy has been damaged and Lenin allowed some private entreprises to return in order to fight famine and bitter diconstent. It was the start of the New economy Policy.

At the same time, a new form of art has boomed: the "Constructivist" movement became dominant.
Posters of this time are a good witness of this "agitational" style of advertising in which strident slogans and aggressive compositions with strong diagonals and color became the peacetime equivalent of the revolutionary poster.

So what were the main aims of ads during the Bolshevik era?

The communist ideology needed to be promoted to the whole population, and particularly to proletarians. That's why this poster has been created: it targets proletarian and, thanks to the idealistic image of a labourer, main principles for work are explained in the text at the bottom of the poster.

The aim of posters during this period was to promote Lenin's vision, which was to bring cultural and political transformations to the country. Thanks to posters Lenin could target the whole population : literate and illiterate population.
Communication through posters became the first truly modern propaganda machine: 3,600 posters were created during 3 years (more than 20 posters per week)!

I chose to make a presentation about this subject because posters have been one of the main tool of communication in Russia since the "Revolution of October". A lot of values have been displayed through posters and these values have, of course, changed in function of the evolution of Russian history.
The purpose of this presentation is not to take a position towards the events and the evolution of Russian policy since the first revolution, so I hope you will read it with a neutral sight.
